PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing apparatus capable of carrying out excellent display in accordance with output image contents in each operating mode and to provide a display control method of the recording and reproducing apparatus. SOLUTION: The recording and reproducing apparatus is characterized in controling a lighting time of a light source of a video display section in accordance with an image output timing of each of the operating modes such as a camera mode, a card moving picture mode, a card still picture mode, and a reproduction mode or the like.
