PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of safely and normally winding a film onto a cartridge even when the total number of frames cannot be discriminated because reading of an image of an APS cartridge is stopped on the way and the film is repacked to a repacking cartridge of a different kind or like processing. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus discriminates a spool diameter by detecting the revolving speed of a spool in the cartridge when the film is extracted from the cartridge. The image reading apparatus properly sets the revolving speed of the spool to attain normal rewinding in response to a result of the discrimination when the film is rewound into the cartridge.
