<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To communicate at the highest communication speed, according to the combination of an image forming apparatus and a postprocessor. <P>SOLUTION: The postprocessor send communicable speed information (V1 to V4) to the image forming apparatus (step S7). The image forming apparatus selects the highest communication speed (123,000 bps) from among communicable speeds between the image forming apparatus and postprocessor, based on the communicable speed information of the image forming apparatus and the communicatable speed information of the postprocessor and determines it as a transfer speed for program data (step S8). Then the image forming apparatus transmits highest communication speed information (125,000 bps) to the postprocessor to indicate the data transfer speed (step S10).
