A motor vehicle has a longitudinally disposed engine 16 with its output shaft 17 extending forwardly to a torque converter 18, the output shaft 27 of which is connected by chain and sprocket or spur gearing 19 to the input of a disengageable clutch 20, the output of which is connected via a change-speed gear-box 21 to a centre differential gear and transfer box 22 having a forwardly extending tubular output shaft 23 coaxial with its input shaft and connected to the input member 28 of a forward differential gear 14 driving the front wheels 10 through half shafts 13. Rearwardly, a drive from the centre differential 22, which may be controlled, is taken through gears 30 and a propeller shaft 24 to a differential gear 15 having output shafts 12 drivingly connected to the rear wheels 11. In a modification, the clutch 20 is disposed between the gearing 19 and the torque converter 18. The torque converter, clutch and change speed gear may be omitted. |
