A process for the purification of an impure gaseous hydrogen fluoride stream, said stream comprising hydrogen fluoride and phosphorous impurities, and being substantially free of sulphuric acid, the process comprising: (a) absorbing the impure gaseous stream into an aqueous acid solution to form a liquid stream; (b) introducing the liquid stream to a distillation column for distillation to form an overhead stream of hydrogen fluoride having a lower phosphorous content than the impure stream and a bottoms stream comprising aqueous acid and impurities.
