The device has a belt spool (14) for a strap (16) of a safety belt, and two gripping units (18, 20) including radial V-shaped clamping sections between which a clamping bar is provided. The strap is led between the bar and a clamping roller, which has external teeth. The sections clamp the strap at a distance from the rotational axis and the strap is wound up by rotating the units in an anti-clockwise manner when the belt is tightened.
