PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a superior disk player and a disk playback method capable of eliminating a user's uneasiness with respect to a deterioration development of a recording medium. SOLUTION: By the disk player, the deterioration of media is discriminated when an error rate becomes a value of a predetermined threshold or larger per unit time, and a signal is generated for instructing a backup. For the user, a loss of preserved valuable data can be prevented and a sense of security is increased, since a timing to take the backup is appropriately knowable. Also, the threshold for discriminating the deterioration is altered to a suitable value in accordance with a condition of scratch on a recording surface of the disk 7, a warp or surface wobbling of the disk, and a compression or recording method of the data.
