The method involves determining operating parameters of a drive unit e.g. motor, and a driven unit. The driven unit is a pair of pulleys of a cone pulley continuously variable transmission. A target slip value is determined from a predetermined base slip value, moment of the drive unit driving the driven unit, a proportionality factor and the function of a transmission ratio. The base value depends on the operating parameters. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining slip between two frictional force transmitting units.
