The identification system is incorporated in the computer controlling the operation of the vehicle, and responds to a badge (1) carried by the driver. The badge carries authorization information to allow starting of the engine. The badge contains an electronic circuit (3) with a non-volatile memory holding data about the vehicle, its state and operation, and on the owner of the vehicle.
