PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus adjusting device and a focus adjusting method easily operating the focus adjustment of a camera module or the like with high versatility. SOLUTION: This focus adjusting device for adjusting the focus of a lens unit having at least one lens for the image pickup face of an image pickup element is provided with: a laser beam irradiation means for irradiating the lens unit with a laser beam and making an image pickup face condense the laser beam; a reflected laser beam image pickup means with which the reflected laser beam of the laser beam reflected on the image pickup face is irradiated for picking the image of the reflected laser beam; an image processing means for processing the pickup image of the reflected laser beam; and a focus adjusting means for adjusting at least one of a distance or posture of the lens unit to the image pickup face on the basis of the result of the image processing by the image processing means. Thus, it is not necessary to prepare any signal processing circuit for focus adjustment to acquire an output from the image pickup element according to the type of the image pickup element, and versatility to the image pickup element is enhanced.
