PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress generation of plugging or skew of a recording medium by making the recording medium caught on a recording head supported by a carriage during carrying the recording medium. SOLUTION: In a recording apparatus performing image recording on the recording medium by scanning the carriage placing the recording head, a stopping prohibiting region of the carriage during carrying the recording medium in accordance with the kind of the recording medium is stored in an EEPROM 52, and a CPU 51 distinguishes the kind of the recording medium at any timing after paper feeding. When the recording medium is carried, based on the content of storing of the EEPROM 52, it is distinguished whether the carriage is positioned within the stopping prohibiting region of the carriage or not, and based on this discrimination, when the carriage is within the stopping prohibiting region, the carriage is moved to the outside of the stopping prohibiting region.
