PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high image quality ink jet recorder by performing head shading, nonejection complementation, regulation of registration and regulation of LF in the order of highest effect. SOLUTION: The ink jet recorder comprises a means performing interpolation recording with a recording element in other recording head corresponding to an unrecordable recording element detected by a means for detecting an unrecordable recording element, a means having a means for detecting gap in print position of a plurality of recording heads and correcting a detected gap, a means for detecting error in feeding direction scanning amount of a recording medium, a means for correcting feeding direction scanning amount of the recording medium, and a means for forming a test pattern after correcting or complementing them wherein the density of the test pattern is read out in correspondence with the plurality of recording elements, the density is made uniform at the time of image formation by means of the plurality of recording elements based on the results thus read out, and then corrected in correspondence with the plurality of recording elements, respectively.
