1,129,005. Acid neutralized addicts of epoxides and hydroxyamines. OWENS CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP. 14 Sept., 1966 [6 April, 1966], No. 41096/66. Addition to 1,057,292. Heading.C3B. Water-soluble, acid-neutralized reaction products of (A) polymers the molecules of which have at one end a terminal oxirane group; and (B) a primary or secondary amine, comprise compounds of the formula Z-R, where Z is wherein Y is H, an alkyl radical of up to 7 chain carbon atoms, or X, and X is (1) an hydroxy substituted aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of up to 7 chain carbon atoms; or (2) -R<SP>1</SP>(OR<SP>1</SP>) n OH, where R<SP>1</SP> is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of up to 6 chain carbon atoms and n is an integer up to 24, and R is a long chain organic radical devoid of the group Z at its other end. Where the polymer is a polyepoxide the amine is added to an excess of the polyepoxide. The addition reaction is performed in an organic solvent which is removed before the adduct is neutralized with an acid. Any remaining oxirane groups may be removed by reaction with another compound e.g. a polyglycol monooleate, dibutylamine or octadecanol, before acidification. Aqueous solutions of the acidneutralized products, which may contain coupling agents are useful as coating compositions. The acid-neutralized products may also be used as emulsifying agents. |
