PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a telescopic type steering device embodied in a structure simplified, small-sized, and light in the weight. SOLUTION: The telescopic type steering device includes a steering column 20 able to elongate and contract in the column axial direction, wherein the steering column 20 is furnished with a supporting stiffness changing means St. The supporting stiffness changing means St has such a constitution that the supporting stiffness of the steering column 20 is decided by the column axial direction length Xa of the slide contacting part of an outer column tube 21 with an inner column tube 22 (the wall thickness part S1 of the outer column tube 21 and the wall thickness part S2 of the inner column tube 22), and enlarges the supporting stiffness of the steering column 20 to larger than the set value according to the elongation amount when the steering column 20 is elongated in the column axial direction from the set length La and lessens the supporting stiffness of the steering column 20 to larger than the set value when the column 20 is contracted in the column axial direction from the set length La.
