PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce banding phenomenon by imparting a density variation to a portion of low density variation where banding phenomenon becomes conspicuous. SOLUTION: A feature amount is created based on the resolution of each pixel of an input image such that the sum SUM of gray levels of adjacent (neighboring) pixels is distributed to the gray level of an original pixel at a predetermined distribution ratio, and that feature amount is reflected on the resolution of the original pixel to increase difference between adjacent gray levels thus imparting a density variation. Since the feature amount is reflected only when the difference of gray level is below a predetermined level, banding phenomenon is reduced efficiently without losing coordination of input and output images.
