PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of easily producing an acicular aluminum hydroxide with large BET specific surface area. SOLUTION: This production method is characterized by performing the hydrothermal reaction of boehmite-type and gibbsite-type aluminum hydroxides in a use amount ratio of 1:99 to 20:80 in the presence of magnesium. The boehmite-type and gibbsite-type aluminum hydroxides are 100-500 m<SP>2</SP>/g and 5-100 m<SP>2</SP>/g in BET specific surface area, respectively and further, the gibbsite-type has the main particle size of 0.1 to 2μm and the sodium content (Na<SB>2</SB>O) of 0.01 to 2 mass%.
