Apparatus for stacking articles 11, e.g. laundry, comprises a band 1 of parallel transversally spaced strips of flexible material one end of which is fixed and the other end coiled around a roller 3 which can be moved from under the article so that the article falls to a stacking station 6. The article 11 is fed along the band 1 by a conveyer 7 and activates an arm 10 to cause a piston-rod 5 to withdraw the roller 3. The roller 3 is spring loaded for counterclockwise rotation to speed withdrawal. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the flexible band (1) passes around the roller (3) and is coiled on a spring loaded roller (14). In a modification of the embodiment, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), a latch (40) is provided which is controlled by a solenoid (42) actuated by a feeler (45) engaged by the article. The roller (32) around which the band is coiled is attached by cables (51), (55) over pulleys (52), (54) to a reciprocable piston-rod (50). |
