The spindle 6 of a butterfly valve is connected by a hollow pin 17 to a hub 16 carrying a handle 35, the hub and spindle being rotatable by the handle through an arc defined by a pin 33 carried by the hub and; moving in a slot in a fixed plate 15. The valve may be locked in any one of a number of intermediate positions by depressing a lever 74 to cause a pin 21 to enter one of a series of overlapping holes arranged in an arc in plate 15, the lever being connected to the rectangular head of the pin 21 by a pin 61 and having a camming action relative to a surface of the hub and being biased to the locking position by a spring 20. When the lever is depressed, a spring clip (85) may be inserted through aligned holes 80 in the lever and through the hollow pin 17. In the embodiment of Fig. 7, locking is achieved at any intermediate position by rotating a nut 97 to cause an enlarged head 100 of a bolt 95 to bind against the upper surface of an enlargement of an arcuate slot that replaces the series of overlapping holes.
