PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic head and its manufacturing method in which an upper layer coil piece formed on an insulation layer having a difference in level can be formed accurately with a prescribed shape, while yoke length can be shortened, and recording efficiency can be improved. SOLUTION: In the magnetic head, an upper layer coil piece 23 is formed in the direction (track width direction) being orthogonal to an extending direction ( height direction) of a both side end part 22a of a coil insulation substrate layer (first insulation layer) 22 projected from a coil insulation layer (second insulation layer) 19. Further, a lower layer coil piece 18 is formed having a straight region being extended to a track width direction being the same direction as the upper layer coil piece 23. Consequently, the upper layer coil piece 23 can be formed accurately with the prescribed shape from the first insulation layer 22 having difference in level over the second insulation layer 19, while yoke length can be shortened.
