PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for detecting impact-resistant characteristics which can exactly detect surfacing variation irrespective of direction of an impact to be applied even when the impact to be applied is large and which can be executed by simple device structure. SOLUTION: In the method for detecting the impact-resistant characteristics of a magnetic head support mechanism in a magnetic disk drive device, a magnetic head supported by the magnetic head support mechanism is loaded on the magnetic disk in which servo information is preliminarily recorded, relationship between reproduction output OUTNOIMand the magnetic head and an offtrack position of the magnetic head is measured and stored while no impact is applied, reproduction output OUTIMof the magnetic head and the offtrack position of the magnetic head when the impact is applied are measured and the surfacing variation of the magnetic head is detected from the magnetic head reproduction output OUTIMmeasured when the impact is applied and the magnetic head reproduction output OUTNOIMmeasured and stored while no impact is applied, corresponding to the magnetic head offtrack position when the impact is applied.
