PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mark reading device capable of satisfying a demand for further miniaturization. SOLUTION: The mark reading device 1 illuminates a coin C after reflecting light radiated from an illuminating section 14 by a reflecting mirror 16 in order to lessen irregularity of illumination. The light which is not utilized as indirect illumination exists in the light radiated from the illuminating section 14. For making effective use of this non-utilized light, a light diffusing member 40 is arranged between the illuminating section 14 and reflecting mirror 16 close to a luminous surface 15a of a LED 15 so that a radiating side of the utilized light on the luminous surface 15a of the LED 15 is opened and a radiating side of the non-utilized light on the luminous surface 15a of the LED 15 is blocked. Accordingly, the non-utilized light radiated from the luminous surface 15a of the LED 15 can be effectively used as illumination. A shortage in light amount caused by miniaturization of the mark reading device 1 can be solved, and reduced contrast of the mark can be prevented. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
