<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elliptical polarization plate of broad band and wide view range also provided with excellent characteristics in oblique direction. <P>SOLUTION: The elliptical polarization plate comprises a protection layer formed on the polarizer and on one side of the polarizer, a 1st birefringent layer functioning as λ/2 plate, a 2nd birefringent layer functioning as λ/4 plate, and a 3rd birefringent layer with refringent distribution of nz>nx=ny. The ratio of the absolute value Rthp of the phase difference in the thickness direction of the protection layer and the absolute value Rth<SB>3</SB>of the phase difference in the depthwise direction of the 3rd birefringent layer Rth<SB>3</SB>/Rthp is in a range of 1.1 to 4. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
