<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transflective liquid crystal display apparatus with a wide viewing angle that can suppress both of light leak in an oblique direction during black display and coloring during white display. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus has a structure comprising, from a first substrate side, a second retardation plate 4, a first retardation plate 3, and a first polarizing plate 2 in the viewing side of the first substrate (counter substrate), and from a second substrate side, a liquid crystal film 8, a third retardation plate 9, and a second polarizing plate 10 in a backlight side of the second substrate (active matrix substrate). In this structure, the tilt direction of the liquid crystal film 8 and the slow axis of the second retardation plate 4 disposed in both sides of the substrates are arranged to be orthogonal to each other, so that anisotropy in retardation caused by the pretilt can be compensated to suppress light leak in an oblique direction during black display, and also dispersion shift at each wavelength can be suppressed to inhibit coloring during white display, resulting in realization of the transflective liquid crystal display apparatus having the wide viewing angle. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
