PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a floating ring type mechanical seal having improved reliability while maintaining good original sealing function by preventing the deformation of an adapter resulting from a temperature difference or high pressure. SOLUTION: The floating ring type mechanical seal comprises a floating ring 5 clamped and held between a rotatable ring 6 to be rotatable integrally with a rotating shaft and a stationary ring 4 to be fixed relative to a seal casing 2, and the cylindrical adapter D mounted thereon one end of which is fitted and supported on the casing 2 and in the other end of which the floating ring 5 is fitted and supported. The adapter D has a cylindrical base end side adapter portion 12 fitted and supported on the casing 2, a cylindrical front end side adapter portion 13 in which the floating ring 5 is fitted and supported, and a connecting means 14 for connecting the adapter portions 12, 13 to each other so as to be relatively movable in a predetermined range in any of longitudinal, cross and vertical three-dimensional directions.
