PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform the forming of an image having a sufficient gradation expression and a sufficient resolution feeling on a medium to be recorded such as an intermediate transfer object by a thermal printer using a heat transfer ink. SOLUTION: This image forming method compares respective pixels of a filter image for which a threshold value pattern for judging whether respective pixels of an original image become printing objects or not by the gradation values is set, and the original image, and converts the gradation of respective pixels of the original image when the image is formed by heat-transferring the ink of a heat transfer ink ribbon 18 onto the intermediate transfer object 12 by a thermal head. Then, a gradation conversion table which specifies the energies of respective pixels at the time of printing in response to the gradation values, and the gradations of respective pixels of the original image which have been converted are compared, and the gradations of respective pixels of the original image which have been converted are converted.
