The sensor includes a high frequency transmitter (20) and a high frequency receiver (22). These are arranged and adapted such that a main transmission direction and a main reception direction are at an angle to each other. Preferably the main directions are determined by the energy current density of the emitted and received radiation. Independent claims also cover a method of detecting the approach of an object.
