A transmitter (100) for transmitting a radio signal comprises a power amplifier (103) for generating an amplified radio frequency signal. A coupling element (107) couples the signal to a measurement controller (109) which determines a non-linearity indication of the power amplifier (103) from the amplified signal. The measurement controller (109) may for example measure a signal level of an out of band frequency interval. The measurement controller (109) is coupled to a power controller (111) which controls an output power of the power amplifier (103) in response to the non-linearity indication. The power controller (111) may specifically deactivate the power amplifier (103) if the non-linearity indication exceeds a given threshold. The invention may in particular allow for a delayed switch-off of a power amplifier (103) during battery backup operation.
