A hammer (1) consists of a handle (2) and an impact head (3) and is used for penetratingly placing an S-shaped insert called esse (4) on the end of a log (5) in order to stop a natural cracking (11) of wood during drying, wherein the inventive hammer is characterised in that the impact head (3) thereof comprises means for pre-holding the esse (4) prior to impact and for accompanying said esse during at least one part of the penetration thereof during impact.
