<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell capable of preventing gas leak caused by the fall of a packing in a gas passage without increasing the number of assembling manhours or the number of parts. <P>SOLUTION: In this fuel cell, a hard gas diffusion layer 2 of a dimension smaller than a solid polymer membrane 1 is connected with both sides of the soft solid polymer membrane 1, and an electrode catalyst layer 3 is connected with the outer surface of each gas diffusion layer 2 to form a membrane electrode joined body 4. Furthermore, a support part 2a is formed by extending the gas diffusion layer 2 to a part where: a separator 5 formed with a gas passage 7 is joined to both surfaces of a membrane/electrode joined body 4; the fuel cells 6 composed of the soft packings 14 as materials for preventing gas leakage are laminated around the gas passage 7 of the separator 5; and the separator 5 at the opposite side serves as the gas passage 7 with the membrane/electrode joined body 4 sandwiched between the packings 14 of the separator 5.
