PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical coupling structure and a fabrication method thereof capable of properly coupling an optical component and a light transmission medium and reducing a cost while achieving miniaturization and simplification of a constitution. SOLUTION: In the optical coupling structure between a surface emitting laser element 3 which is disposed on a printed circuit board 5 and has a light incident/outgoing port 3A in the vertical direction for the printed circuit board 5 and an optical fiber 1, a holding member 2 which holds the optical fiber 1 is inserted to a position fixation member 4 which is disposed on the printed circuit board 5 so as to surround the light incident/outgoing port 3A of the surface emitting laser element 3. Thereby, relative positioning between the optical fiber 1 and the light incident/outgoing port 3A is performed, and the optical fiber 1 and the surface emitting laser element 3 are optically coupled.
