PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a start device for a four cycle engine reversibly reducing switching frequency of execution and stop of exhaust gas recirculation and improving re-startability. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a cam shaft 18 and a change over mechanism 17 enabling exhaust gas recirculation into a cylinder by valve reopen action reopening an exhaust valve in intake stroke in addition to open action of the exhaust valve in exhaust stroke, and a VVL control part 52 capable of switching execution and stop of the reopen valve action by the valve drive means. An engine automatic stop condition is established and engine speed at a time of stop of fuel supply is set higher than idling speed at a time of normal operation, the VVL control part 52 stops the valve reopen action in a middle of engine automatic stop action period after fuel supply stop, and restarts the engine after a predetermined time passes from a timing when a restart condition is satisfied at least after engine stop.
