METHOD OF PRODUCING COATING SUBSTANCE

A method of simply determining quality of a coating film, particularly film surface quality of a porous inkjet recording medium, and a method of producing a coating substance adjusted based on the determination. A method of producing a coating substance has a coating film forming process for forming a coating film by applying a coating liquid on a support body and drying the liquid; a color material application process for applying powder or dispersion liquid to at least a part of the region of the formed coating film, the powder or dispersion liquid being visually distinguishable from the color of the coating film; a color material wipe-off process for wiping off the applied powder or dispersion liquid; a crack detection process for detecting color material particles remaining in the coating film surface in the region to detect a crack; and a quality level determination process for determining the quality level of the coating film based on conditions of the detected crack. After the above processes, a coating film is formed in coating conditions that depend on the determined quality level of the coating film.
