Hydrogen containing gas is made by catalytically enacting petroleum hydrocarbons and steam at elevated pressure using externally heated tubes filled with catalyst having the following characteristics: Ni, 30 to 45%, MgO less than 1%, alkali metal oxides less than 0.5%, Al2O3 more than 40%; CaO, 5 to 8%, surface area more than 20 m2/gm., the process being effected with catalyst ratings of up to 2 Kg. hydrocarbons per like catalyst per hour, whereby a gas is produced, the CH4 content of which is adjustable between less than 1 vol. per cent and 55 vol. per cent solely by varying the hydrocarbon vapour/steam ratio and the outlet temperature of the gas, both as a function of the pressure used. In Example 2 a gas containing 0.8% CH4 and 71.5% H2 is produced; in Example 3 a gas having a calorific value of 4650 Kcal Nm3 containing 33.2% CH4 and 41.2% H2 is produced. In Example 4 a gas is produced which after subjection to a CO2 wash and CO methanization yields a product with a calorific value of 8050 Kcal/Nm3.ALSO:Cracking catalysts comprise 30-45% mi, less than 1% MgO, less than 0.5% alkali metal oxides, more than 40% Al2O3, 5-8% CaO, the catalyst having a surface area of more than 20m2/gm. |
