In an apparatus for producing glass fibres by flowing streams of molten glass from orifices formed on projections depending from the stream feeder which contains the molten glass, and attenuating the streams to form fine continuous filaments, heat-absorbing means and a plurality of fin members are arranged adjacent the mouths of the orifices to transmit heat away from the conical zones of the streams of glass issuing from the orifices, the fin members being composed of a non-ferrous metal coated with a dissimilar metal. The fin members are connected in heat transferring relationship with the heat absorbing means, such as a manifold, which conducts a heat exchange fluid, the fins preferably extending parallel from the manifold between rows of projections in which the orifices are formed. The preferred non-ferrous metal is copper or silver, and the preferred coating metal is nickel. Preferably the fluid conducting means is composed of a non-ferrous metal coated with a dissimilar metal. In one embodiment a stream feeder 10 containing glass melted by means of an electric current passing through lugs 16, has in its bottom surface rows of projections 20 containing orifices from which streams of molten glass flow to form filaments 30, heat being conducted away from the cones of glass 28 adjacent the orifices by means of fins 56 formed of a non-ferrous metal coated with a dissimilar metal, the fins extending from a manifold 52 through which a heat exchange fluid passes being supplied through inlet tube 58 and withdrawn through outlet tube 59.</p> |
