A wheel rim and pneumatic tyre assembly comprises a concave rim 1 receiving complementarily-shaped beads 5, the rim subtending an angle of not more than 150 degrees and the bead supporting portions not less than 10 degrees at a common arc 2. The rim may be split and may have annular steps positioned to support the toes of the beads. In another arrangement, the tyre is located on the rim by sidewall projections abutting the rim edges 7. A safety ring of expanded elastomer, e.g. polyurethane with airtight cells, may be fitted within the tyre between the bead ends. In a modification, the diameters of the rim edges 7 are different. The tyre beads may be reinforced either with bead wires or with extra plies in the bead regions.</p> |
