1,137,479. Debris guards for aircraft windscreens. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. 14 Feb., 1967 [28 Feb., 1966], No. 8650/66. Heading B7W. [Also in Division F1] A debris guard for protecting windscreens, which in the embodiment protects the air intake of an aircraft gas turbine engine, comprises a plurality of vanes of low loss aerofoil section, spaced apart so as to obstruct the passage of any foreign body likely to be met in normal flight having such momentum as might lead to serious damage to the aircraft, the vanes having separate nose portions intended to be deformed by impact with such foreign bodies so as to further obstruct the passage of said bodies. The debris guard shown comprises inner and outer ring members 1 and 2 between which extend a series of radially disposed vanes 3 of aerofoil section, each vane comprising a solid trailing portion 5 and a hollow leading portion 6. The leading portion 6 would be deformed as indicated in broken lines if struck by a foreign body during flight. Hot gases may be passed through the hollow leading portions of the vanes to prevent icing. The vanes may alternatively extend in parallel disposition, and might be adapted to be turned so as not to obscure the view during landing or take-off.
|
