The engine has a flywheel with two flywheel components, where one flywheel component is fixedly connected to a crankshaft (11) and to another flywheel component by a spring to allow limited relative rotation between the two flywheel components. A blocking device (12) selectively engages to one component during engine shutdown to secure the flywheel in a rotationally fixed position. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlled shut down of a multiple cylinder internal combustion engine.
