The present invention relates to a process for degrading asbestos-containing materials comprising the following steps: (a) the asbestos-containing materials and one or more solid alkali metal hydroxides are added to a reactor; and (b) the mixture prepared in step (a) is heated to a temperature of between about 170° C and about 580°C for at least about 10 minutes.
