A method of preparing a fabric structure comprises dissolving a gas under high pressure in a viscous composition having components capable of undergoing chemical reactions for increase of molecular weight, pumping the mixture of gas and viscous composition to a linear distribution zone extending across the width of an advancing sheet of textile fabric, the gas undergoing a release to substantially atmospheric pressure throughout the linear distribution zone thereby depositing on the advancing sheet of textile fabric a froth containing bubbles of expanding gas, advancing the sheet of textile fabric from the distribution zone through a thickness controlling zone in which heat is applied to bring about curing of the components of the viscous composition and to transform the froth into stable plastic securely bonded to the fabric. The gas dissolved in the viscous composition may be at a pressure greater than 50 lbs/sq. in. The gas may be dissolved in the viscous composition to such an extent that the mixture has a density lower than the desired density of the foam. The foam may be deposited between two layers of textile fabric e.g. a denim or a nylon fabric. The resin may comprise a mixture including isocyanate e.g. tolylene diisocyanate, and hydroxyl groups e.g. polypropylene ether glycol, whereby the plastic foam comprises polyurethane groups; an epoxide resin prepared by the reaction of diepoxy butane and polypropylene glycol, or a polyadipamide resin i.e. nylon. The gas may be a fluorinated hydrocarbon e.g. difluorodichloromethane, mixed with carbon dioxide. |
