[Also in Division G1] In a device for scanning a spectrum photoelectrically the dispersed beam is reflected by a rotating mirror on to a series of fixed mirrors successively whence it is reflected through a number of slits to a small number of detectors. In a first embodiment, Fig.1 the dispersed beam R 1 from a prism 1 is reduced in size by a Cassegrain telescope 2, 3 and falls on a twosided rotating mirror m. The beam is reflected by mirror m in turn twice per cycle on to parabolic mirrors M 1 , M 2 , M 3 and M 4 whence it is reflected through slits G 1 , G 2 and via elliptical mirrors N 1 , N 2 to doped germanium detectors, D 1 D 2 . The output of detectors D 1 , D 2 may be displayed on a common oscillograph. In a modification, the mirrors may be elliptical with foci at mirror m and slits G 1 G 2 . In this case the telescope focuses the dispersed beam on the centre of the mirror m. In a second embodiment, Fig.2, the mirror m reflects the dispersed beam R 2 on to parabolic mirrors M 1 -M 8 and thence through slits G 1 -G 8 and via elliptical mirrors N 1 and N 2 to detectors D 1 D 2 . The invention may be used for the analysis of transitory chemical species in rapid reactions by infrared spectrography.</p> |
