1,142,439. Tapping metallurgical converters. MANNESMANN A.G. 25 Sept., 1967 [26 Sept., 1966], No. 43474/67. Heading F4B. A device for holding back slag during tapping of a metallurgical converter comprises a refractory disc 5 with a guide bar 6 disposed in the converter taphole, and a retaining bar 7 releasably attached to a tripping device. The latter comprises a tube 9 with arms 10 having apertures 11 through which said bar 7 passes and is held by a tube 13 attached to a tensioned rod 12. When the latter is released, the device floats freely on the metal, sinking through the superposed slag, due to its relative density of 1À1-1À8 that of the slag. The disc has a diameter at least twice that of the taphole and the guide bar 6 is made of refractory or is of refractory covered metal. The cross-section of the disc may be conical or of a droplet shape to accommodate erosion of the taphole.
|
