1,142,083. Mg/SiC alloys. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Oct.2, 1967 [Oct.3, 1966], No.44745/67. Headings C7A and C7D. Magnesium, or a magnesium base alloy, containing 1-90% volume of SiC whiskers (preferably uniaxially aligned)are made by immersing a mould having at least one opening therein, containing the whiskers, in a Mg or Mg base alloy melt to cover all the openings for sufficient time for the melt to fill the remainder of the mould cavity, after which the mould is removed and the metal allowed to solidify. The mould cavity and the whiskers must be substantially anhydrous and this is preferably achieved by heating them to 1400-1600‹F. prior to immersion. The Mg base alloy infiltrant must contain at least 70% Mg and may also contain up to 9% Al up to 5À5% Zn and up to 0À5% Zr. |
