Colloidal dispersion (I) in a liquid phase comprises particles of a cerium compound, where the particles are coated at least partly by a silica layer. INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for: (1) the preparation of (I) comprising reaction of (I) with an alkaline silicate (at pH 7) or with a silicon alkoxide; (2) a polymer material composition, cosmetic composition, painting, coating and a fiber comprising (I); and (3) a solid compound, which is obtained from dispersion by separating some particles of the liquid phase.
