The exhaust gas filter, for treating gases (12) emitted from an internal combustion motor, has at least one strip layer with at least one filter zone (2) at least partially of a material which allows a fluid flow through it, and with a metal foil if required. The filter can be formed from structured filter layers (16) and smooth metal sheet layers (15). The filter has a contact zone (3), with a shorter length (18) than the axial length (17) of the filter, with a coating of an active catalyst material to convert exhaust gas components while particles in the gas flow are retained by the filter.
