PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a personal identification device on the basis of face authentication by a camera for securing the simplicity or reliability of authentication without being accompanied with redundant double authentication. SOLUTION: Another authentication different from face authentication is operated when the matching level of face authentication is within a preliminarily set range(gray zone) of discrimination difficulty under the control of an image processing unit 20 and a vehicle side controller 30 connected to a camera 10 for face authentication. The other authentication is performed by reading the data(the number to be decided according to the configurations of the hand) of a hand image in an image photographed by the camera 10 which is the same as that of the face authentication, and compares the data of the hand image with preliminarily registered data, and when those data are matched, it is decided that a person to be authenticated is identical.
