PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a damping force generating valve structure for a hydraulic shock absorber for inexpensively and reliably generating predetermined damping force. SOLUTION: The damping force generating valve structure for the hydraulic shock absorber comprises a valve body 6 of a piston part or a base valve part in which elongation or pressure side ports 6a, 6b are formed, and one or more leaf valves 5, 7 placed on the valve body 6 for sheeting the elongation or pressure side ports 6a, 6b in a closeable manner. Leaf valve placement seat faces 15, 16 are provided at the opening ends of the elongation or pressure side ports 6a, 6b of the valve body 6. On the seat face 15, there are a choke groove 17, a port side communication groove 18 communicated with the choke groove 17 via the elongation or pressure side ports 6a, 6b, and an outside communication groove 19 communicated with the outsides of the elongation or pressure side ports 6a, 6b via the choke groove 17. A choke passage T is formed by the choke groove 17, the port side communication grove 18 and the outside communication grove 19 and the leaf valve 7a placed on the seat face 15.
