PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To aim at quick convergence of an engine control parameter to the vicinity of a stability limit, regarding a control device for operating an internal combustion engine at the vicinity of a stability limit. SOLUTION: Indicated torque ITQ is computed by integrating the combustion pressure of the internal combustion engine over 720°CA. At each operation condition of the internal combustion engine and with a change of an ignition timing, correlation materialized between the indicated torque ITQ and standard deviationσof the ITQ is stored (Relation of a solid line relation and relation of a broken line). Measured indicated torque ITQ is applied on correlation and the standard deviationσof the ITQ is estimated.
