Alcohols and aluminium alkoxides are prepared in a process for the oxidation of aluminium alkyls which comprises oxidizing one or more aluminium alkyls or a mixture of one or more aluminium alkyls and one or more aluminium alkoxides in the presence of, as catalyst, one or more organometallic compounds of a metal of Group III B , IV B or V B , viz. Sc, Y, La, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb or Ta, the proportion of organometallic compound being such that the metal or metals are present in an amount of from 0À1 to 10% by weight of the aluminium present. The ratio of aluminium alkyl to aluminium alkoxide in the mixed starting material is preferably such that 50-70% of the organo groups attached to aluminium are alkoxide groups. This starting material can be obtained by oxidizing an aluminium alkyl in the absence of a catalyst using an oxygen containing gas. The alkoxides, alum (aluminium sulphate) by-product and detergent are also claimed when prepared from alcohols obtained by this process.
