PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a modem which uses information from a prior modem call in a present modem call when a present communication line has the same characteristics as those of a communication line of the previous call. SOLUTION: It is judged whether or not in the course of modem training the characteristics of the present communication line are substantially the same as those of the communication line used during at least one previous call. When both characteristics are substantially the same, signal constellation used in the course of data mode of the present call is designed using stored data mode information from the prior call. When both characteristics are substantially not the same, a complete modem training is implemented, and the data mode information is stored for use in succeeding calls. It may be judged whether there is a change in the quality of the communication line between the present call and the prior call. When there is no change in the line quality, the signal constellation is designed using minimum signal distances stored from one or a plural of prior calls. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
