PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for a variable cylinder type internal combustion engine achieving good fuel economy by executing partial cylinder operation mode as much as possible with suppressing vibration and noise during partial cylinder operation mode. SOLUTION: The control device 1 for the variable cylinder type internal combustion engine operating with switching operation mode to all cylinder operation mode operating all of a plurality of cylinders #1-#3, #4-#6 and partial cylinder operation mode stopping operation of part of cylinders #1-#3 of a plurality of the cylinders, calculates a parameter of degree of continuity SDTQCSNH indicating degree of continuity of a condition where detected load of the internal combustion engine TQECMDF in a predetermined load range between a first criterion TQCSNH and a second criterion TQCSEH smaller than that during partial cylinder operation mode (S10-S13), and determines based on the parameter of degree of continuity SDTQCSNH whether operation mode should be switched to all cylinder operation mode or not (S14).
